Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty dedicated primarily to diagnosing patients using substances marked with radioisotopes, in order to provide essentially functional information, and to treating patients using non-encapsulated radioactive sources.

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty that uses radioactive isotopes, nuclear radiation, electromagnetic variations in the components of the atomic nucleus and related biophysical techniques for medical prevention, diagnosis, therapy and research. It includes the study of biological phenomena caused by the use of radioactive isotopes, the use of cyclotrons and nuclear reactors in the production of radionuclides for medical use, and the application of image-reconstruction and data-processing systems.

Scope of Nuclear Medicine

Prevention

In this regard, the knowledge and techniques associated with Nuclear Medicine are applied to hygiene, prophylactic and preventive medicine, and radiological protection.

Research

Nuclear Medicine is carried out in basic and applied research, using radioactive isotopes and related biophysical techniques.

Diagnosis

This essentially includes the performance of functional, morphological, dynamic, morphofunctional and analytical tests, based on biochemical, physiological and pathophysiological principles, that are intended to lead to a better knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body both in illness and in health.

Treatment

Not only do the diagnostic techniques of Nuclear Medicine have a significant impact on the treatment and management of patients, this specialty also covers certain specific therapeutic indications involving the administration of radiopharmaceuticals to patients (metabolic therapy, endolymphatic therapy, intracavitary therapy, and so on). It also includes the treatment and prevention of the biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation, especially when this exposure is due to external irradiation or contamination caused by non-encapsulated radioactive substances.
