Intensive Medicine

Intensive Medicine in Spain Intensive care medicine is a medical specialty that was officially established in our country in 1978, with a 5-year training program including two years of common core training followed by three years of specific training in an intensive care unit accredited for training.

Intensive Medicine is defined as the branch of medicine concerning patients who have pathophysiological disorders that have become so severe that they represent an actual or potential threat to the life of the patient, and who at the same time are capable of recovery.

Intensive Care Units (ICU) are the primary workplaces of practitioners of this specialty.

They are multi-functional Central Services that operate closely with other hospital services and the Health Area, and attend to both medical and surgery patients who share the characteristics of being in a critical condition and having the potential to recover. For this reason, they are unique in their architectural design, technical equipment and qualified staff.

In addition, Intensive Medicine can have applications outside the hospital, in any location where it may be necessary, especially when transporting patients in a critical condition or when providing healthcare in disaster situations of any kind.
