HM Hospitales performs the first endoscopic mastectomy with immediate direct prosthesis reconstruction in private healthcare

April 15, 2025

HM Hospitales has once again set a milestone in Spanish private healthcare by introducing new surgical techniques, bringing immediate benefits to patients and representing a substantial change to existing practice and significant medical advancement.

On this occasion, a surgical team specialising in oncology and gynaecology, together with a plastic surgery team from Hospital Universitario HM Puerta del Sur, have successfully performed an innovative technique called endoscopic mastectomy with immediate direct prosthesis reconstruction on a patient diagnosed with breast cancer. This procedure has been performed for the first time in Spanish private healthcare.

This novel approach was led by Dr Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Zambrano, Head of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Service at Hospital Universitario HM Puerta del Sur. It was performed on 17 March with the participation of Dr Israel Iglesias’ Plastic Surgery team. Among the many advantages of this procedure is its minimal psychological impact, in contrast to more invasive procedures or complex reconstructions. This benefit is achieved because the technique avoids visible scars, significantly minimises postoperative pain, and provides excellent aesthetic results by completely preserving the skin and nipple.

‘At HM Hospitales, we are proud to offer this cutting-edge technique to our patients who require a mastectomy and meet the appropriate conditions. While not all cases are suitable for this procedure, it represents a major advance in quality of life and oncological safety for selected patients, allowing complete preservation of the breast skin and nipple,‘ emphasised Dr Rodríguez Zambrano.

This advanced technique, until now limited to a few public hospitals in Spain, enables a minimally invasive approach through a small incision of just 4 centimetres in the axillary area. Through this incision, a single silicone port is inserted, which, via laparoscopy, facilitates both the removal and extraction of breast tissue and the immediate placement of a definitive anatomical prosthesis.

Furthermore, the medical team highlights the essential benefits of this technique, such as optimised surgical times and reduced stress due to its minimally invasive nature. With the introduction of this procedure, HM Hospitales reaffirms its commitment to innovation and care excellence, providing patients access to the most advanced techniques in oncological and reconstructive surgery while significantly improving their recovery and emotional wellbeing after surgery.
