• HM Hospitales has opened the doors of its ninth hospital in Madrid. The new facility, Hospital Universitario HM Madrid Río stands out as a cutting-edge medical infrastructure, offering highly personalised and comprehensive healthcare services, thanks to its team of highly specialised and qualified professionals.
HM Madrid Río is a general medical-surgical hospital that enriches a rapidly developing urban area. The hospital is strategically located in a central hub for tourism, cultural activities, and leisure in the heart of Madrid. “With the launch of HM Madrid Río University Hospital, we fulfil a long-standing aspiration within the Group to expand our already extensive healthcare network and strengthen our presence in our natural and original environment, Madrid. We are confident that this new facility will benefit the residents and visitors of central Madrid, an area that previously lacked a healthcare facility of this size. In this way, we solidify our position as the leading private hospital group in the Madrid region,” said Dr Juan Abarca, President of HM Hospitales.
With an investment of more than €55 million, the hospital provides care across key medical specialities and features a 24-hour emergency department, an ICU, an operating theatre complex, 58 patient rooms — expanding to 74 in 2026 — 40 outpatient consultation rooms, a hospital pharmacy, and an in-house clinical analysis laboratory.
Under the direction of Dr Carlos Mascías, HM Madrid Río is expected to create 250 direct jobs, both in healthcare and administrative roles, along with a similar number of indirect jobs. This new healthcare facility not only enhances the range of services available in central Madrid but, like other centres within the Group, is strongly focused on education and research.
This new hospital also boasts a wide range of outpatient specialities and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including an advanced imaging diagnosis service with two high-field MRI scanners, a multi-slice CT scanner, conventional radiology, highresolution ultrasound, and a Women’s Unit featuring tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, and breast interventional procedures.
International Patient Department
HM Madrid Río University Hospital will feature an International Patient Department, which will work closely with the medical team to manage the cases of expatriates or individuals seeking medical consultations or second opinions from their home countries. This service is considered strategic and essential due to the hospital’s prime location in central Madrid, a city that welcomes millions of foreign tourists and visitors each year.
A Digital Focus
HM Hospitales’ advanced technology is not limited to clinical practice and diagnosis but extends to internal protocols and processes, as well as patient care. In this regard, HM Madrid Río is also characterised by its digital innovation, with an IT platform that allows healthcare professionals to securely and instantly share patients’ medical records, ensuring precise, multidisciplinary care. This networked approach also enables automatic data capture, electronic prescription, and medication administration control, ensuring that each drug is matched to the correct patient. Patients can also access test results, appointments, and other services via the HM Hospitales app, enhancing their overall care experience.
Located in the Arganzuela district at Calle de los Cobos de Segovia 4, HM Madrid Río covers a built area of 10,343 m² and is designed to meet the healthcare needs of over 500,000 people from the surrounding neighbourhoods, including Centro, Retiro, Moncloa, Carabanchel, Delicias, Villaverde, and Latina.
Sustainability
This new facility is built with a strong commitment to sustainability, having achieved a Category C energy certification. The hospital is equipped with advanced heating and cooling systems that automatically adjust energy consumption based on demand. In addition, water-saving devices such as energy-controlled taps and low-volume cisterns help to reduce environmental impact without compromising comfort. HM Madrid Río is also integrated into the HM Hospitales Group’s Environmental and Energy Management System, adhering to ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standards, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
In addition, HM Hospitales plans to open the HM Nuevo Norte Day Hospital in Madrid’s Sanchinarro neighbourhood in the first half of 2025, followed by the HM Tres Cantos University Hospital in the second half of the same year, demonstrating the Group’s ongoing commitment to the city of Madrid and its residents.
