HM Hospitales and PharmaMar collaborate to explore connection between cancer drugs and marine world with paediatric patients

March 27, 2025

HM Hospitales and PharmaMar have joined forces to create a unique educational experience for young patients, exploring the fascinating link between oncology treatments and marine ecosystems. This innovative initiative blends science, education, and entertainment to introduce paediatric patients to cancer research through an immersive, ocean-themed workshop.

Few days ago at HM Montepríncipe University Hospital, children aged 6 to 14 from the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Unit (part of the HM CIOCC Comprehensive Cancer Centre) and other paediatric inpatients participated in a special workshop. They discovered how marine organisms have played a crucial role in developing groundbreaking cancer treatments while exploring stunning underwater biodiversity through captivating imagery.

The session was led by Montserrat Andrade, PharmaMar Board Member, biologist, medical graduate, and photographer behind most of the striking underwater images featured in the exhibition. Each participating child received a copy of ‘The Underwater World’ a book showcasing the beauty and richness of marine ecosystems while highlighting their significance in biomedical research. Additional copies were distributed to all children visiting HM Montepríncipe that day.

“This initiative ensures that as many young patients as possible can connect healthcare with biodiversity in an engaging way,” said Dr. Juan Abarca Cidón, President of HM Hospitales.

As part of the collaboration, copies of ‘The Underwater World’ will be distributed across all paediatric departments within HM Hospitales’ network, transforming the project from a single-hospital event into a nationwide programme for young patients treated by the Group.

This alliance reinforces both organisations’ dedication to medical innovation, health education, and paediatric patient care, using the ocean’s wonders to spark curiosity about science and research.
