1,600 UN employees will take part of the UN Inter-Agency Games 2024 in Lloret de Mar

October 24, 2024

•  HM Hospitales International Patient Services will be the premium medical provider of the event and will offer medical assistance to all participants.

•  These games, in their 49th edition, reinforce the relationships between active and non-active members of the 50 UN agencies across 120 countries.

From October 23 to 27, Lloret de Mar will host the international event United Nations Inter-Agency Games 2024, with the participation of more than 1,600 members of UN staff from 120 different countries.

This is the 49th edition of these games that were created in 1968 in Paris and last year were held in the Algarve. Every year a UN Office is responsible of organising this event and, this year, the Vienna team is in charge of organising it in Lloret de Mar.

The UN Inter-Agency Games bring together participants from various UN agencies with the aim of fostering friendship, cohesion, friendly competition and teamwork among UN employees. During their stay they will carry out a wide range of sports events scheduled in the different sports facilities of the municipality and its surroundings (athletics, team sports such as football, basketball or handball, tennis and padel or swimming, among others). The opening ceremony will take place on October 23, at the Gran Casino Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar.

The HM Hospitales Group is the official healthcare provider and offers medical support and preventive care and rehabilitation services during the event and the doctor Rafael Acerete will be available on Thursday and Friday for any medical assistance or injury. This service is considered strategic and essential as Lloret de Mar welcomes millions of foreign tourists and visitors each year.

Since 2012, the HM Hospitals Group has provided coverage in a specialised and personalised way to the international community, both for residents and for people traveling for work, education or tourism to Spain.

This event was captured by the Lloret Turisme team as part of the Sports&Events workshop that Lloret de Mar hosted in October 2023. Elizabeth Keegan, manager of Lloret Turisme, explains that “Lloret de Mar has a recognized history both in the MICE segment as in sports tourism, with the great strength of proximity and centrality between facilities that allows us to offer a very attractive value proposition for these types of events”. Lloret Turisme has supported the logistical coordination of the event and acted as liaison with other supra-municipal administrations in the territory such as the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, a collaborator of the event.
